Events Of The American Revolution - 1264 Words
Events That Led to The American Revolution Throughout history there has been many wars, some wars were fought for world domination and others were fought for independence. One war that fought for independence was the American Revolution. The American Revolution was fought between the colonists and the English with the French aiding the colonists. There are many causes for the American Revolution some of the causes are the French and Indian War, The Sugar and Stamp Act, The Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea Party, and the Intolerable Acts. The French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years War, was a conflict involving Austria, England, France, Great Britain, and Sweden. The war took place in Europe, India and North America. Theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Which angered the colonist because it was done without their consent and without a representative in the parliament to speak for them. This was the beginning of open hostilities between the colonies and Great Britain. After months of protest, and an appeal by Benjamin Franklin before the British house of Commons, Parliament voted to repeal the Stamp Act in March, 1766. However, the very same day, Parliament passed other act. The Declaratory act. The Declaratory Act was passed by the British parliament to affirm its power to legislate for the colonies ââ¬Å"in all cases whatsoeverâ⬠. According to Berris (2015), the declaration stated the Parliament authority was the same in America as in Britain and asserted Parliamentââ¬â¢s authority to pass laws that were binding on the American colonies. The colonies did not dispute the notion of Parliamentary supremacy over the law. In fact, most of the colonist at that time wanted to be part of the British empire, and were horrified at the idea of breaking away from England. But the Declaratory Act allowed the colonies to be taxed without representation. Which infuriated the colonist and caused them to truly start thinking about breaking away. By 1767, a series of taxations were introduced to the English Parliament by Charles Townshend called The Townshend Revenue Acts. These
Worker Productivity
Questions: When estimating the duration of effort-driven project activities, the resources expected to do the work must be specified. One of the factors that will determine the work duration estimate is worker productivity.A. Define worker productivity (in the context of project work) ?B. Describe at least 3 factors that will affect worker productivity and explain how these factors will influence the estimate of work duration?C. Describe two techniques, related to one or more of the factors described above, that may be used in directing workers or in establishing the work environment that will improve worker productivity? Answers: A. Worker Productivity: The productivity of the worker is defined as the assessment of how efficient a worker is. The productivity could be evaluated in the terms of the output of an employee in any given period of time. The productivity of any employee or the worker is calculated by using the average amount of time taken by the other workers or the employees doing the similar work. The success of any organization is dependent upon the productivity that is given by the workforce and it is an important consideration for the business involved. (Whatls.com, 2015) When one talks about the productivity of the worker or the labor, he is actually talking about the construction industry in which the cost and the quantity of the labor hours is involved for performing the task of construction. But it is really important to know that the measure of productivity of the labor is the measure of the overall effectiveness of the of any system that is utilizing the labor, equipment and the capital in order to convert the efforts of the labor into the useful output and is not a measure of the capabilities of the labor alone. In order to illustrate this, when the organization purchases any new equipment, then the number of hours of the labor will get reduced and the labor productivity will get increased. The main effectiveness of the operating system is in the process of utilizing the about, equipment and capital so as to convert the efforts of the labor into something that is useful. This is not the capability of labor all by itself. (pmbook.ce.cmu.edu., 2015) B. Factors that will affect worker productivity and explain how these factors will influence the estimate of work duration: The workers and the labor that is working on the site of the job have the characteristics that are either oriented. There are working conditions and then there are non-productive activities. The labor characteristics includes the following: The age, skill and the experience that is possessed by the workforce. The leadership and the motivation of the workforce involved. The project work includes the following stated factors: Size of the job and the complexity involved in it The accessibility to the job site The availability of the labor The utilization of the equipment The contractual agreements involved The local climate The local cultural characteristics, particularly in the foreign operations. The non-productive activities are associated with the project may or may not be paid by the owner but they take up the resources of the labor that could otherwise be directed to the project. The non-productive activities includes the following stated factors: The indirect labor that is required to maintain the progress of the project The rework for correcting the unsatisfactory work The stoppage of the work of the temporary staff due to the inclement weather or the shortage of the material Time off for the union activities Absentee time including the starting the work late or quitting the work early Non-working holidays strikes The following are other factors that contribute to the labor productivity: Time: the studies that have been conducted in the past have shown that the decrease in the productivity when the person or the labor or the worker is working overtime. The reasons for the same have been told as fatigue, increased absenteeism, decrease in the morale, reduction in the effectiveness of the supervision, poor workmanship. This further results in higher number of reworks, increase in the number of the accidents. When the person is working overtime, this would initially result in the increase in the output but later on, will reduce the productivity. The time that is used by the labor on the productive activities are about 30% of the total amount of time that is available. Schedule compression: when there have been early delays in the project, then there is a compression of the overall time frame for the later activity and they are the ones that compensate for the interruptions and to complete the task that has been assigned on the schedule. Type of the project: when any task has been assigned to the member, each of the member must carry out his task efficiently without letting his work to be affected by the work or the task of the other crew members. When the labor is allocate done task within a given set of time frame, then the interference with the other will occur. Further, when there are many trades that have been assigned some work in the same area, then the clashes are bound to take place. And when there are a number of tasks that have been assigned to the workers, then they will definitely interfere in each others work. Safety: the number of accidents that takes place on the site has a bearing on the labor productivity. Since, when the accidents occur, the work is totally stopped for a number of days or for weeks. When a fellow worker is injured and is hospitalized, the work of the crew gets reduced and this leads to the decrease in the productivity. Equipment: Improper working conditions: when the employer does not provide adequate and proper working conditions, then the productivity of the labor get further reduced. For example, when there is inadequate lighting, then the workers will not be able to work properly and their efficiency will come down and so would their productivity. Attitudes of the managers: the skills and the attitudes of the managers have an important bearing on the managers. In many of the organizations, the productivity of the labor is low since they have bene handed the latest technology that they have no knowledge as to how to use. The productivity of the labor is low because the management is indifferent and inefficient. The managers that are experienced and are committed are able to obtain many surprising results from the people of the average mind set. Manpower group: the recent studies have shown that if the experience of the labor is negative, then the same negatively affects the productivity of the labor and hence, proves that in order to achieve the good productivity of the labor, they play a very significant role. Motivation: the absence of motivation is another reason s to why the labor productivity decreases. (Library.ndsu.edu, 2015) (NBRI, 2015) C. Two techniques, related to one or more of the factors described above, that may be used in directing workers or in establishing the work environment that will improve worker productivity: Motivation: Motivation is one of the key factors in improving and exceeding the performance of the employee. It need not always be monetary. Some of the factors that contribute to motivation are as follows: The support from the management and an effective delegation of the work. Certificate of appreciation More and more responsibilities and the team management The training for an improved performance and the profile improvement Challenging opportunities and the projects A ear that listens to everything Providing an effective feedback Providing positive team environments Lack of the bias form the managers The manager with the head on his or her shoulders and an effective leadership. (Smarthr, 2015) Motivation is something that increases the willingness of the workers to work and increases the effectiveness in the organization. It helps in the following: Best utilization of the resources Reduction in the number of labor problems Cooperation Increase in the production and the product (Organization, 2015) Respecting the employees: The workers and the employees must be respected for the work that they do and also as the individuals. When the workers and the employees feel that they are genuinely being respected, then they will try to go to an extra mile in order to help the company to succeed. (Lipman, 2013) Many a times, we take the things for granted when we actually should not. People keep on saying that we must always look at the glass half full but the study has proved otherwise. The study states that the people who seen the glass as half full do not do better than the people who sees it as empty. The same thing applies to the life and to the business. When the employees and the workers are happy, they are more productive. When they are respected and tend to enjoy the status quo. When the employees are happy, they will take new challenges and try to prove themselves. (Businessweek.com, 2015)

Agent-Assisted Publishing An interview with IPSO Books
Agent-Assisted Publishing An interview with IPSO Books Agent-Assisted Publishing: Interviewing Robert Caskie from IPSO Books We started Reedsy around a year ago, thinking mostly about independent authors and hoping to give them, through our marketplace, access to a range of talent that has so far been exclusive to traditional publishing companies.Along the way, however, many different players have come to know about Reedsy, and agencies are one of them - and a very exciting one at that. While the role of the agent is often questioned in an increasingly disintermediated industry, we personally believe agents remain a key link in the publishing chain.Because agenciesà are closest to the author, and have their best interests at heart, they are not afraid of the digital ââ¬Å"disruptionâ⬠. Some, like Peters Fraser Dunlop in London even see it as an opportunity to be seized. That is what agent-assisted publishing is all about. If youââ¬â¢re interested in digital publishing, this interview is a must-watch. It is, as of yet, one of the most innovative and thoroughly-developed propositions we have seen for a digital imprint. As usual, unconditional lovers of the written word will find the transcript of the key moments right below. Hi Robert, thank you so much for welcoming us in Peters Fraser Dunlop offices here in London, theyââ¬â¢re really lovely! For our readers who donââ¬â¢t know about PFD, can you give us a bit of background on the agency?Itââ¬â¢s lovely to have you, Ricardo. Weââ¬â¢re one of the longest established and biggest agencies in London at the moment, and we represent a whole range of writers. We also have literary estates, which is one of the reasons we came towards digital publishing. We own and partially own mainly crime estates, and itââ¬â¢s through the interest of exploiting them further that we came to form IPSO.Youââ¬â¢re a senior agent here at PFD and youââ¬â¢re also COO of the company, right?Thatââ¬â¢s correct, yes. I came to join PFD 8 years ago, and brought a list at that time a list of mainly journalists and fiction authors. Over the years I increased in seniority and four years ago I was made the COO, which basically means my role is to try to manage as effi ciently as possible the different roles of the company. I try to make sure everybody is happy, working hard, and generally try to create a positive work environment where everybody achieves the best they can.I try to do that too at Reedsy. But let me dive right into why we are here: PFD is about to launch their own digital publishing (or agent-assisted publishing) imprint: IPSO books. What was your thinking behind that?At the start of the year we were looking at these estates that we represent, like Eric Ambler, Margery Allingham and John Creasy, and we were seeing quite clear passion. There were traditional print publishers who, out of a collection of maybe 20 books, liked maybe 5, which they made into print, then they made 10 as ebooks, and then thereââ¬â¢s a lot remaining which we believe is of equal quality. And still, I think, with print publishers, the ebook is the poor cousin of the print editionâ⬠¦So we thought we would take control of this, in a very agenting sort o f way, and we would be much more proactive. So we thought: why not, essentially, ââ¬Å"assistâ⬠these estates in creating a higher profile for content that is not being exploited, but also so this can feed into the other print editions and other editions of the book. This is where I think we might be different from a digital publisher, because what weââ¬â¢ll be doing here (and we will be doing this for front-list authors as well), is we promote all books written in all editions. So we will have our digital publishing, or agent-assisted publishing arm called IPSO, and we will obviously promote IPSO books, but we will also promote other books by other publishers, even in print and in foreign language. We want to promote the brand of the author rather than just the books that we have.Obviously for the price promotions, we meet directly with Amazon, iBooks. We go in and talk about what weââ¬â¢ve got coming up. This week for example weââ¬â¢ve got Eric Ambler books as ââ¬Å "book of the weekâ⬠both on Amazon and iBooksâ⬠¦ I think that because we have dealt with them previously through White Glove, which was the agent aspect of Amazon, we now have a good relationship with the retailers. Thatââ¬â¢s really important because I think iBooks, for example, are much more editorially-led so they like to choose books that they read and like.Alright, now to close this interview, Iââ¬â¢d like to ask a more general question on the role of the agent moving forward. How do you see it, do you think itââ¬â¢s still going to be mostly about selling rights, or is there going to be more coaching, advising, or even publishing and marketing?I think for us the past few years have definitely redefined that author-agent relationship and made it much more symbiotic and much more equal. From what I see with IPSO we are actively and actually investing in an author before we make any money. I think thatââ¬â¢s a very exciting prospect, and I am confident that th is will lead perhaps to much more interesting and much more varied content.Of course, we will continue to sell to publishing houses. Most publishers - all publishers - do certain things extremely well. But I think maybe the ebook is something that publishers have shied away from a little bit and donââ¬â¢t quite know what to do with, so I think that for agents, helping the author with that is a good opportunity. That will still potentially lead the author to a print publisher as well, and why not, weââ¬â¢d be very happy with that. So I think itââ¬â¢s just empowering the author at an earlier stage.I definitely think so, and thatââ¬â¢s why I find this initiative so interesting. I think youââ¬â¢ve shown here at PFD a tremendous capacity to innovate and be creative about publishing, and Iââ¬â¢m really happy to have been able to interview you for our blog, Robert. What are your thoughts about agent-assisted publishing initiatives? How does the IPSOà Books proposition sound? Let us know your thoughts, or any questions for Robert, in the comments below!

How Slavery started in the United States Research Paper
How Slavery started in the United States - Research Paper Example This is what the Romans did and the Greeks before them, it was the Europeansââ¬â¢ turn for imperialistic conquest. The New World conquest yielded new lands, riches and slave labor which set-off an imperialistic hunger that spread to Africa. It was closer, larger and the natives from that continent were preferred as slaves over the natives of the Americas. Initially, when the Spanish controlled the Caribbean islands, their interests were only in the mining of silver and gold. When the riches of the mines had been exhausted, the search for additional wealth moved inland and the Spaniards adopted a plantation based economy (Meyer, 2003). Products from the Americas such as tobacco, cotton, cocoa and sugar were becoming increasingly popular in Europe which caused the Caribbean plantations growing these commodities to grow accordingly. The shortage of man-power to operate these ever-growing plantations required many numbers of slaves from Africa to be imported. As the Spaniards were rea ping the rewards from its colonization of the Americas, their need for additional labor in the mines and plantations continued to grow. However, the local population was dwindling with the influx of disease and abuse and this, combined with Spain abolishing the enslavement of natives in the Americas in the mid 1500ââ¬â¢s, necessitated a need to acquire Africans to fill their labor requirements (Meyer, 2003). By the early 19th century, the New World wealth had been well plundered and it was widely feared that the slaves emanating from there could spread new diseases in Europe or contract European diseases and die themselves. Africa was an attractive target to quench the Europeansââ¬â¢ new thirst to create far-away empires and control territories that held the raw materials needed to maintain and grow their prosperous economies which were built upon imperialistic tactics. New territories also meant the opportunity to trade with new markets. By the mid 19th century, the conquest for Africa was well underway. Gaining and controlling new territories outside the original country was justified by many explanations. A certain amount of national pride fueled the desire for an expansionist agenda. Obtaining new colonies was widely viewed as a gauge of a nationââ¬â¢s global prominence. Another justification was based on the prevalent racist attitude. ââ¬Å"Europeans thought that they were better than Africansâ⬠(McDougal-Littell, 1999). Church officials and missionaries encouraged imperialism because the natives of conquered territories could be more easily coerced to convert to Christianity. In the initial phase of slavery in the New World (1519-1580), colonies were being formed and the trade of slaves was somewhat limited. From 1580 to 1650, slave trade from Africa soared because of the massive Native American deaths due to disease, the growth of the economy in the colonies and the unification of the Portuguese and Spanish governments (Palmer, 1976). The early era of colonization in the New World was a time of enormous changes as ââ¬Å"the native Indian populations were decimated by disease and increasingly dominated by the Spanish social and economic structureâ⬠(Meyer, 2003). Slavery declined steadily during the years 1650 to 1827. ââ¬Å"From New England to Virginia to Jamaica, the English planters in seventeenth-century America developed the habit of murdering the soil for a few quick crops and then moving along. On the sugar plantations, unhappily, they also murdered the slavesââ¬

Organizational Behavior Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 11
Organizational Behavior - Essay Example Becoming a better leader is an important and worthy cause. Good leaders are able to motivate and improve the performance of the employees. Being a charismatic leader can be beneficial, but charismatic leadership is not the only effective form of leadership. Other leadership styles such as transformational and transactional leadership can help a manager lead a company in a productive manner. Behavioral theories and situational contingency theories can also be used by managers to improve leadership. Workplace diversity is a critical driver of innovation in an organization. The reason that diversity helps foster innovation is because a diverse workforce is more creative than a homogeneous workforce. The human resource department is responsible for hiring a diverse workforce composition within an enterprise. I believe that a lot of innovative companies have a diverse workforce. Due to the globalization movement many multinational firms operate in various countries simultaneously. These firms have to be adept at dealing with workforce diversity issues. Creativity within a workforce leads to product innovation. Do you think that motivation is best fostered with extrinsic rewards such as money or do you think that organizations and leaders should strive to develop intrinsic motivation (love of job, making a difference, etc.)? I believe that the most effective motivator is the use of extrinsic rewards. People at work are motivated by financial rewards. Some financial rewards often used by corporations include bonuses, commissions, and stock option plans. Intrinsic rewards can be effective as a secondary type of motivator. A firm can become more ââ¬Å"asshole resistantâ⬠by recruiting employees that have strong moral character. The implementation of a code of ethics can create standards of conduct that the employees of a company must follow. High ethical conduct is desirable in all the

Upgrading Wastewater Treatment Facilities Coursework
Upgrading Wastewater Treatment Facilities - Coursework Example 1.0 Introduction With the inception of urbanization and the modern society, there has arisen a looming problem on water and sanitation. This has mostly been attributed to consequences resulting from population effects such as downgraded sewerage systems, poorly maintained wetlands just to mention but a few. This gives an evidence of the fact that wastewater and the methods used in its treatment have given lasting challenges to the society. Further, urgent measures have been necessitated by the history pollution abatement measures have had as entails the time factor; ever since industrialization, urbanization and similar revolutions were set on stage. At an earlier point in time, sanitation standards basically stipulated for the reduction of pollutions due to emissions emanating from pathogens and organic matter, but of recent times has been the focus on heavy metals and nutrients. Other than the modern approaches focusing on metallic compounds and nutrients, equally handy concepts ha ve been proposed accompanied by advanced levels of technologies that if effectively put in place, will push wastewater management practices to a newer level. The sewage treatment especially at individual homesteads has employed a variety of wastewater treatment concepts and philosophies among others. All these are aimed at achieving the ultimate goal of addressing current trends of wastewater both at the urban and rural levels. As a response to these strategies, various strategies including legislations have been put in place. A good example of such a legislation includes ââ¬Å"The European Union Urban Wastewater Directive, 91/271/EEC; which states that agglomerations
